it ALMOST seems harmless and comical but I know different. There have been cases where someone did some serious harm when under the influence of ambien. its such a small number of people that go totally dark and do really damger things that the FDA decided to go with a warning and little more action. There was a Kennedy cousin yers ago that drove to the Senate and got into some kind of trouble in his PJ's and claimed to be on ambien....being a Kennedy nobody wanted to buy that story but after my experience, i can easily see it happening and NOBODY could dream up a story like this if it were not true.

trust me i know, ive sleepwalked before i even took it. so that wasnt new to me. course on ambien alot more people started to sleepwalk. when i was like 5 i ran into the street and someone on a bike hit me, ran right in front of him and he flipped over me it was surreal. hes like what are u nuts! i had no idea i had a problem course i was young. i remembered that tho running outside eyes open and all but i never saw him till he hit me and i woke up.
ps my parents werent really concerned till i was around 7-9 when i would walk past them or past their bedroom they would try and talk to me and id just keep walking like zombie. after that they started to send me to a shrink, because it was happening alot maybe 1-2 times a week for a while.

If I take Ambien and go to bed, I have never had a problem. The only bad experience I had with Ambien involved alcohol. I don't drink much, but or some reason I took Ambien after a glass of wine, then must have had about 3 more. Not sure how I got to the bedroom that night!

I really like CODE21's reply. So thorough!
Sounds a lot like me, tried this, tried that and still have a nightmare just trying to get to sleep.
I cant take it all the time, obviously - But One valium right before lights out has worked the best for me.
No druggie hangover either.

My choice is Ambien, however, I too am a sleep eater. What is funny though is that I have lost weight. Also, two years ago I used Buy-It-Now on eBay and bought my car! I was aware enough to buy it from a local seller and was pleased with my purchase, but I have also received beach sandals in the mail for my grandson that I never knew I ordered. I am completely out of Ambien tonight, so it's going to be a lonnnnnnggggg hard night tonight!
I never bought a car but I cooked plenty and rearranged the room, did crafts, worked on the car...plenty of things to do around the house..when lost on this drug, I cannot even say that I know whats going on. sometimes its days before I figure out what i did and is it gonna come back on me???

I have fairly severe sleep issues - insomnia and sometimes something close to narcolepsy. I can go an entire week with a total of 15 hours of sleep. The only thing that has ever helped without any significant side effects is Valium. Valium puts me to sleep with the only real side effect being vivid dreams. I take 10mg every other night and it seems to do the job. I always keep a small amount of Ritalin for those days when the opposite is true and I cant stay awake - although this is fairly rare occurring maybe once a month at most.

Bladerunner, could I suggest that you seem to need a "sleep study" done to find out why your sleeping patterns have such a far range between them. Going from insomnia to narcolepsy needs medical specific analysis to do you some good, and find out what's causing this rather than trying to find the "right" med. Hope you have some luck if you go that route. It helps lots of people who have gone through the study. There might be a Sleep Study Center near your home. Good luck. Soho

When I first began taking Ambien, I used to paint things! For example, I would go to get my cell phone before I left for work and I would find that I painted it with nail polish. I mean I REALLY painted it, with lots and lots of coats of polish! I would also paint my toenails, but they would be all messed up in the morning because they weren't dry enough when I got in to my bed. I also took the screen door handle off and spray painted it an off white color when it WAS black. I don't paint things anymore, but I do take things apart to "fix" them and I find them disassembled the next morning. Very strange!

Sleep eater! I did that a month weeks ago. Made Top Ramen, which I HATE.
I'm using trazodone for sleep for my fibro. Works great. I liked Ambien; name brand is better and CR is the best. But trazodone knocks me out. My NP wants me to try Xyrem when/if it comes out on the market (but I think she'll be able to get it because the University is part of the trial). I have insomnia and probable sleep apnea along with FM.

for me, ambien is the worst drug ever invented. i get every single side effect and my memory is wiped for days. nothing works for me and i stay up until i pass out (can be days.) insomnia has ruined my life and taken my fathers. i am not just a small percentage affeted as i hear horror stories many times --none like me.
i would kill for some lousy seconals -- my grandpa lived 'til 96 and did not miss one night! time to try to pass out.
good night, all...i hope.

I have been taking 30mgs Dalmane for a while now and it works well for me. It is a hypnotic benzodiazopine specifically used for insomnia. Hope that helps. Khilee

i'm sure it would work for most. just not me -- i went to the sleep clinic at columbia preabyterian years ago.
my case was the worst they've seen and wanted me to go on tv with the head doctor to talk about my being the "worse case scenario". of course -- i refused.
i used to vision getting out of bed when my husband was snoring just when i finally did fal!l asleep -- go to the kitchen and get the big black heavy skillet and bash his brains in.
very healthy!!!!! probably could have gotten away with a minimum sentence too!

Seroquel can be pretty effective for sleep. As for benzos for sleep, I would have to go with midazolam as what has worked best for me personally. And from what ive seen about barbiturates (Tuinal, Seconal, etc..) they are mostly extinct, except for phenobarbital, which I have found to be lacking in the sleep aid department.
where can i get something for sleep? i have been taking lorazepam 2 mg which for some reason is impossible to get from IOP recently. i have ambien cr, but i think they must be old, i sleep maybe 5 hours a night when i take those. my doc prescribed them (no refills) and they are probably getting close to 2 years old. never did like them much anyway. (please don't tell me to go to my doc because he is basically unresponsive to me these days. i need to get a new doc, but they don't seem to want to prescribe anything except antidepressants anymore.)
Midazolam is a very dangerous drug that to much of it could put you to sleep for the rest of your life. You need to be under the care of a doctor when taking this. I don't think you will find a doctor to prescribe this for sleep. It is used mostly as a sedative for procedures. If it is ever prescribed for sleep it is given for only a short time and under the care of a MD. I would never order anything for sleep online unless you have tried it b4.

Ambien has always been the best, fastest-acting for me, and with the least amount of drowsiness the next morning, which is a problem for me with most sleep aids.

Actually the oral midazolam tabs known as dormicum in 7.5 and 15mg made by Roche are prescribed in many countries. I would say it is safer than ambien as I have tried both and didn't have the sleepwalking, sleepeating, strange amnesia that ambien produces. Just pop a dormicum and you'llbe asleep in 20 minutes with no morning hangover. I think the above poster is thinking of the injectable midazolam used as a anesthetic for procedures like colonscopies and biopsies.
I agree with Clee, the oral midazolam tabs are very effective to put me to sleep fast, with no hangover the next day. They seem to be short acting though. I don't see them as being "dangerous" when used occasionally and as directed. Another sleep aid I prefer is Nitrazepam. Takes a bit longer to kick in, but puts me to sleep for a good 10 hours.
