Yes [Xanax is] effective against panic, but not for long unless you keep titrating upwards, which almost everyone finds themselves doing.
Partially true (of true PD patients), but Xanax XR is an effective alternative to spikes of q.i.d.'ing.

V is a better choice for many reasons.
But not for PD. It's just an addictive, nonpotent tranquilizer bearing little efficacy for panic disorder, either as prophylaxis or palliation. For the long-term treatment of panic disorder, the SSRIs and sometimes psychotherapy techniques such as situation-specific densitization therapy really are as good an alternative as is Xanax (well, for patients with no prior history of substance abuse or benzo addiction, anyway).

XR - Extended Release They are coated in layers so that each layer carries with it an inherent absorption time thus cutting back on the number of times one needs to dose themselves within a day and increasing patient compliance. If you crush the pill up, those layers are broken up and the whole pill is absorbed at once, giving you more medicine than was intended. An example would be Oxycontin which is like an Oxycodone XR of sorts. Hope that helps.
Oh man. The controlled or extended release of today's pharmaceuticals. You could spend a flippin' collegiate semester trying to find out the newer technologies for the how they do that.
It's stumped me. I Google the darned thing using these search words (following is what I enter):
[polymer polymeric matrices drug release]
And I find out more than I ever wanted to know there was to KNOW about this stuff. Confusing!
The technology is always evolving. Where at one time I thought there to be two primary ways in which this worked:- enteric coating: designed so as not to disintegrate until it reaches the pH environment of the intestine
- polymeric diffusion, or matrices ("matrices" is plural for matrix): uncoated tablet in which the drug is homogeneously diffused throughout a matrix of selected polymers that dissolve and release the active agent at predetermined rate
I have now learned this is to be but a child's simplifed overview of the technology. LOL "Enteric coating" and "polymer matrix" are not mutually exclusive means of controlling the release of active drug. You can have multiple layers (degradable polymers) comprising the outer enteric coating!
There are also extended-release, non-coated formations in which the tablet is scored??? Can be split??? How can this be???
And so ya see, folks. I like to TALK a good game. I hardly know it all.

Ihave chronic pain issues. So I have no idea about Alprazolam but as I have posted before I have a best friend who was just prescribe Alprazolam 2mg 2x I FEEL THIS drug IS EVIL!I feel sorry to you patients that have to take this drug to survive. He has been on the drug since 2/3/06 and he is having alot of issues while on it. Here are few,
Slurring speech
Knocking things over
Sleeping all the time
stumbling around like he is drunk.
Cant Drive.
What Ihave problem with is why would a professional Dr prescibe such a large dose to a patient who has never even taken anti axiety medicine before.
I make him break the bars in half.
He will be calling the Dr on 2/5/06 abouttheseissues.
My question is normal side effects to this medication first time using it?

4mg.'s a day does seem like a lot but not on the verge of being ludicrous. What were the symptoms he was describing to the doctor? As with any drug it boils down to patient-doctor relationship. Your friend needs to tell this to the doctor and i'm sure he will adjust it. I was prescirbed a large mount of benzo's 3x a day and after the second pill i would fall asleep at my desk. i told the doc and she told me to start breaking the pills in half. To say the drug is evil is a complete exageration. It is evil if not used properly. If used properly, it is the only way some people can survive. Sometimes it is trial and error to find out what is "proper". i would say that those are typical side effects, expecially at those doses.

I usually take 10 mg. a day and make it to work every day and operate all kinds of machinery with no probles at all.
How long have you been taking 10mg of Xanax a day? Man that's a lot of Xanax for a person to be taking daily. Not judging just asking.

I haven't taken xanax in a long time, like 6 years, and don't remember it doing much for me. I have some free 2mg samples. Can someone tell me what to expect? I am very familiar with most other benzo's, especially lorazepam, diazepam, and clonazepam.
Compare the 4 if you sould for me. I am waiting until the weekend to try them. I have taken 5mg V, or.5mg A, or .5mg K , at work, and not had much sleepiness or relaxation. Is xanax the med I've been looking for? If so what is a good dose tstart woth?
\I hyave to take 20-30mg of Valiums(American Rx's) to get sleep, 10mg makes me groggy and a little relaxed, so I have a fairly high tolerance.
Just wondering if this is a med that is safe to use at work, I operate heavy machinery, and do not want to lose my sense of judgement, I regularly take 390-40mg of hydro at worjk without much noticable impairment.
Any and all opinions aer welcomed.
